Milad-Un Nabi: Eid-e-Milad is the Muslim festival which is also known as Mawlid and Milad-Un Nabi celebrated all around the world. It falls on December 1 in most of the countries and in some places it is on November 30. In India, it is initially assumed to be on December 1. But later there is a change in the date due to the lunar calendar.
According to the lunar calendar, Mawlid will begin on the evening of December 1 and will end on the evening of December 2. The celebration of Mawlid has been extended as the moon has not been sighted. Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have changed the date of Milad-Un Nabi due to the same reasons.
Significance of Mawlid
Mawlid is believed to be the Prophet Muhammed’s Birthday and it varies between the two branches of Muslims, Islam-Sunnies and Shia Muslims. For Sunnis, the Eid-e-Milad is said to fall on the 12th day of the third month of the Islamic calendar called Rabi’ al-aawal. But Shias believe that Prophet Muhammad was actually born on the 17th day of the month.
Celebration of Eid-e-Milad
On the day of Milad-Un Nabi, Muslims gather to pray at the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. Muslims in all over the world celebrate the festival with street processions and decorations on homes and mosques to mark the occasion. In India and Pakistan, Eid-e-Milad is an important festival for Muslims but is not celebrated in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
