Guru Purnima 2017: Guru Purnima is celebrated by Buddhists in the honour of Gautama Buddha on the memory of Buddha who gave his Sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India. Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima. Vyasa Purnima is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa who is the author and character in the Hindu epic Mahabharatha.

Guru Purnima is usually celebrated during Ashadha month on the full moon day traditionally. This day is usually reserved for worshipping Gurus. Guru is a spiritual guide who enlighten principles in life by his teachings. Adi Shankara, Sri Ramanuja Acharya and Sri Madhvacharya are the important gurus in Hinduism.

Guru Purnima is a Hindu festival which is celebrated all over the country. Buddhists also celebrate this in the memory of Buddha. Guru Purnima is celebrated every year because the Hindu monks believe that it is the way to pray to Guru Vyasa who created the four Vedas. Many people do puja in their home on this holy day to make it a day for their teacher.
