Karunanidhi: Karunanidhi, president of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) who was ailing for some time, died at the age of 94 at Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital on Tuesday at 6:10 PM. He was a long-standing leader of the Dravidian self-respect movement for more than 50 years and ten-time president of his own party.

For the past 11 days, Karunanidhi was admitted in Kauvery hospital due to some health issues like low in Blood Pressure and Urinary infection. Kauvery Hospital has released the press statement last week about Karunanidhi that his health conditions are better and he is getting cured. But today, the hospital has released that his body is not responding to the treatment because of his age.

Also, his body is unstable and very critical. His organs failed to work and he was in observation. Later today at 6:40 PM (August 7, Tuesday) the hospital has announced that DMK President Karunanidhi passed away.

  • The Puducherry government has declared a holiday tomorrow and has announced a three-day mourning following the demise of DMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Karunanidhi (1924-2018) Life History

At the age of 14, Karunanidhi entered the politics. He was inspired by a speech by Alagiriswamii of the Justice Party. He participated in Anti-Hindi agitations and founded an organisation for the local youth of his locality. Karunanidhi entered the Tamil Nadu assembly at the age of 33 by winning the Kulithalai seat in the 1957 election.

When Annadurai expired in 1969, Karunanidhi became the Chief Minister of the state. However, he suffered multiple electoral defeats against his primary opponent M.G. Ramachandran’s ADMK until the latter’s death in 1987. In the film industry, he was well known for his writing works. The title Kalaignar was given by M.R. Radha to Karunanidhi.

Karunanidhi, original name was Dakshinamurthy, was born in Thirukkuvalai village in Nagapattinam district. During his school time, Karunanidhi was more interested in drama, poetry and literature. He was survived with three wives named late Padmavathy, Dayalu and Rajathi.

He has six children, four sons and two daughters. His sons’ names were M K Muthu, M K Alagiri, M K Stalin, and M K Tamilarasu and two daughters, Selvi and Kanimozhi. M K Muthu, his eldest son, was born to Padmavathy, who died early. Azhagiri, Stalin, Selvi and Tamilarasu were born to Dayalu, while Kanimozhi is the only daughter from his third wife, Rajathi.
