In a recent workshop held by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Tuesday, Reliance Jio announced the scrapping of interconnection user charges (IUC), while the other three networks raise against them. ICU costs where the customer pays an amount for every call, but Reliance denies this number and provides free calls. For every mobile phone call, the telecom firm that originates the call pays 14 paise to the one which receives the call, called interconnection user charges. Jio proposed zero ICU charges, while the other three networks provided the cost structures at a press meet and announced the ICU charges to be raised to 30 paise. Smaller operators maintained that Trai should not change IUC charges.
The Jio officials announced that the cost call was zero and it proposed as “bill and keep” model, in which companies only maintain a record of incoming calls on their network but don’t raise any demand from other operators. “Some workers said to reduce the charges, some said increase them, some also requested to maintain it at current levels,” Trai chairman R.S. Sharma stated in an interview. He did not reveal any more details. Emails sent to Reliance Jio, Vodafone, Idea, and Airtel seeking comments remained unanswered.
